After more than 50 years of flying off car lots with happy customers, there is no way to deny that a Mustang is an American Icon. This vehicle has grown through generations. And is the preferred muscle car of many automobile enthusiasts. While most agree that this vehicle is one of America’s most prized traditions, many dispute over which of the six generations was the best.

The first generation reigned from 1965 to 1973. Donald N Frey was the head engineer behind this new American muscle car and the project to create it was called T-5. This prototype was a two-seater car with a mid mounted engine. The original advertised price of this car was $2,368

The second generation came into effect between 1974 and 1978. The prototype was called Mustang II and was introduced in September of 1973. This generation reduced in size and provided both coupe and hatchback options, and the company even provided a luxury model called the Ghia model, inspired by the Ghia of Italy.

The third generation lasted from 1979 to 1993. These vehicles increased body size and more room for passengers providing a backseat option to increase seating from two to four. The vehicle was developed on a larger platform which was originally developed for the creation of other vehicles. This generation had two different front ends and was selected to be the official pace car of the Indianapolis 500 in 1979.

The Fourth generation came into play in 1994 and lasted until 2004. This was Ford’s first redesign in 14 years and the vehicle’s code-name was SN-95. It differed from the other generations in that it was redesigned to have rear-wheel drive. It was also unique in that it brought back a few styling agents from older generation versions.

The fifth-generation lasted from 2005 to 2014. This model was first revealed at the 2005 North American International Auto Show. Its codename was S-197. The styling of this generation echoed some of the styling of the 1960s model. The 2010 model had a redesigned exterior which included sequential LED tail lights. Engine options were also revised in this generation, providing buyers with even more options.

The sixth generation expands from 2015 to present. The newest generation was unveiled on December of 2013 with the code-name S-550. The body was widened for this generation and new colors were introduced. In addition, this car provided a bit more room for passengers and offers three engine options.

No matter what generation, buyers can be rest assured that when they drive their new Ford Mustang off the lot in Costa Mesa, that they joining an American legacy that spans over many loyal generations.
