Ford Edge

Edge

As far as size goes, the five-seater Ford Edge is the middle child of the Ford SUV lineup, but it comes with a such a wide selection of trims and engine sizes that there’s arguably an Edge for everyone.

The base engine is 245-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 275 pound-feet of torque that will get you 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway with front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive that drops to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

Speed demons might prefer to opt for the 3.5-liter V-6 engine which pumps out 280-horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.

The jewel in the crown has to be the top-spec Ford Edge Sport, which is powered by a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that comes as standard with all-wheel drive, delivering 315 horsepower.

All engines are teamed up with a six-speed automatic gearing system.

Despite its tidy proportions there’s plenty of room to fit five adults comfortably, while the cargo space is generous (39 cubic feet with all seats up, 73 cubic feet with passengers seats folded down).

The Edge Sport

The Edge Sport is the most tricked-out model of the four available trims - and this year it comes with all-new ‘Sport Appearance package’, which adds 19-inch painted aluminium wheels, a grille surround, skid plates, exterior mirror caps, and a rear spoiler to its mysterious darkened look.

This is a  cool addition to a model which already made some stylish improvements, including a modern 20-inch wheel design and four creatively-named colors Canyon Ridge, Blue Jeans, White Gold, and Burgundy Velvet in 2017.

Safety first

Also new for 2018 is the ‘Safe and Smart package’, which can be added to all four trims.

It includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, an auto-dimming driver’s mirror, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

With so many hi-tech safety features in one package, this will surely appeal to most drivers with a sense of responsibility.
